We all know that avoiding any kind of weight gain is to eat healthy and eat in moderation.  But let’s

get real: common sense and appetite control go out the window during this time of year. Even if you

have superhuman willpower the Holiday Season is challenging for everyone. More turkey? Yes

please. Another slice of pie? Definitely. Champagne? You bet. Mix that with all the nibbles laying

around and you’ve become another statistic of the holiday weight gain crew and your pants start

to feel like you’ve left them in the dryer a little too long. Wink. Wink.

Don’t get me wrong, the Holidays should be about celebration, togetherness and indulging.  But

there’s no need to go overboard every day. How can you avoid the inevitable weight gain this time

of year? Here are some tips I think you will find helpful.

Keep moving. Just because your schedule becomes extra tight with holiday gatherings doesn’t

mean you can skip the gym. Keeping your blood pumping helps to elevate your mood, boost your

metabolism and work off that last piece of pie with a huge dollop of whipped cream you just ate. But,

if you just can’t make it to the gym, then go for an extra long walk each day or search for HIIT

exercises you can do in the convenience of your own home in 10-20 minutes. Easy. And course

there’s always and App for that.

Hydrate: Keep pounding that water! A great rule of thumb is to drink half of your weight in

ounces of water each and every day. And if you’re having holiday cocktails, drink a glass of water

between drinks for extra hydration.

Portion Control: Use smaller plates. It tricks you into thinking you’re having a feast.

Pick a protein and add Fiber:  They fill you up faster and longer than sugar.

Never go to a party hungry: That’s just a recipe for disaster. So have a pre-party snack high in

protein or fiber. Even if it’s just a protein shake you’ll be ahead of the game going in.

Skip the Starbucks Craze: Those drinks are nothing but a loaded sugar bomb. If coffee is

your thing, then make your own. You’ll save money and a ridiculous amount of calories.

No Booze Binging: Speaking of calories, do you know how many calories and sugar are in some

of those mixed drinks? Choose wisely and avoid the sugary mixers. Tonic is better than fruit juice,

and club soda is even better. Avoid the milky, chocolate drinks unless you are replacing your dessert

with this divine glass of goodness. Then drink up! But limit it to just one

Now, if these things just aren’t cutting it, it’s time to bring in back up. Appetite control supplementation

can be very helpful, but they can also be harmful if you select the wrong kind or over use them.  Selecting

a quality brand is pretty important here. Look at the ingredients and choose vitamin based, non-

stimulating supplements that won’t leave you feeling jittery and exhausted at the same time. You want

to feel energized and healthy, not an anxious, sweaty insomniac.
