Very basically, Acupuncture is the insertion of very fine needles on the body's surface, in order to influence physiological functioning of the body. The purpose of these needles is to stimulate specific acupuncture points to promote self healing of imbalanced areas. In some cases, acupuncture may be accompanied by electrical stimulation, cupping, or the burning of moxa, a form of heat therapy.
The modern scientific explanation is that needling the acupuncture points stimulates the nervous system to release chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These chemicals will either change the experience of pain, or they will trigger the release of other chemicals and hormones which influence the body's own internal regulating system.

Is Acupuncture Safe?
Acupuncture is extremely safe, minimally invasive, and essentially free of side effects.  Our clinic uses sterile, disposable needles that are discarded after each use. 

What should I expect during treatment?
Most people enjoy acupuncture and find it very relaxing.  Often people are surprised at how comfortable they become during a treatment.  They may even fall asleep.  Acupuncture needles are made of extremely thin, solid, flexible, surgical stainless steel.  The insertion of the acupuncture needle is usually painless.  Occasionally a slight sensation may be felt upon entry.  Once the needles are in place, the individual should not be aware of any discomfort, but instead they may feel warmth or other mild sensations at the needle site.

Does my insurance cover this?
This depends upon your policy. Please keep in mind that health insurance was never designed to keep you healthy - it was designed to cover expensive drugs and surgery. We require payment at the time of service. On request, we will provide the information you need to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement. In the case of injuries sustained in an automobile accident, Florida law requires Auto PIP policies to pay for treatment. In this situation, we generally accept assignment once benefits are verified.  

How long does it take to work?                       
Response rate is dependent upon the individual patient, the life-style and the condition being treated. Typically, symptoms disappear anywhere from 3 to 15 treatments.  This puts you back to right where you were before you noticed the symptoms.  To maintain optimum health and energy, most conditions require attention for a longer period of time.
