Infrared Therapy is a relaxing experience that can increase the benefits of other therapies by way of increasing the major healing mechanisms of the body. Heat is the mechanism by which the sauna delivers its benefits. Steam saunas operate at a much higher temperature, approximately 220F, making them uncomfortable to sit in and enjoy for more than a few minutes. Infrared saunas are most beneficial at a temperature of 110-150F. At these temperatures, the peripheral blood vessels dilate assisting the healing of muscle and soft tissue injuries.
Infrared heat penetrates several inches into the body. It stimulates metabolism and allows the cells to shed toxins more readily in your sweat. Some incubators for premature infants emit low amounts of infrared.
The body interprets the raise in temperature as a “fever”, increasing the immune system, the cardiovascular system, and cleansing the lymph system. Heart rate and cardiac output increase while diastolic blood pressure decreases for overall improved cardiovascular fitness.
Why do I need to sweat?
Our bodies have 4 systems of elimination: the lungs assist in the release of carbon dioxide and lymph fluid, the colon rids the body of solid wastes, the kidneys filter the blood and assist the body with releasing fluid wastes, and the largest organ of the body; The Skin, rids the body of toxins by way of sweating. Everyday we are exposed to heavy metals (lead, mercury, nickel, cadmium) and toxins, through pesticides, herbicides, air and water pollution, and the clothes we wear just to name a few. Sauna use helps the body release some of these chemicals. Sitting in an infrared sauna for 30 minutes produces the same amount of sweat as you would from a 6 mile run and 2-3 times more sweat than a steam sauna.
What will regular sauna use help me with?
Some health challenges that can benefit from regular sauna use are:
What can I expect during my first session?
During your sauna session it is best to use a natural bristle brush to stimulate the largest organ of your body….your skin! Before you get into the sauna you should dry-brush your skin from your feet up towards your heart, then get into our shower to rinse off. It is most beneficial to have a large glass of water before hand. You will get into the sauna, which will be around 120 degrees and you can read, meditate, and relax for 25 to 30 minutes. Afterwards, you can use the brush in the shower to cleanse the skin before going on your way! Continue to drink water throughout the day to assist the body in its eliminatory processes.
